Conjunction หรือคำสันธานทำหน้าที่เป็นตัวเชื่อม (Joiner)
ซึ่งสามารถแยกเป็น 4 ชนิดดังนี้

1. Coordinate Conjunction ได้แก่
For (เพราะว่า), And (และ),
Nor (ไม่), But (แต่),
Or (หรือ), Yet (ถึงอย่างนั้น),
So (ดังนั้น) หรือที่เรียกง่ายๆว่า (FANBOYS)
สามารถทำหน้าได้ดังนี้
1.1 ใช้เชื่อมในระดับ คำ-คำ, วลี-วลี, อนุประโยค-อนุประโยค เช่น
1.1.1 ระดับ คำ-คำ (Word-Word)
Either she or I am going to
Japan tomorrow.
Neither she nor I am going to
Korean tomorrow.
The bride buys a tuxedo and a necktie.
1.1.2 ระดับ วลีกับวลี (Phrase-Phrase)
Was Jason’s hidden condom kept under
the tissue box or in the pencil box?
The treasure box is hidden at those
isles and on
the beach somewhere.
1.1.3 ระดับ อนุประโยคกับอนุประโยค (Clause-Cluase)
What you say and what you do are
two different things.
She asked where you were and what you did.
1.1.4 ระดับ ประโยคกับประโยค (Sentence-Sentence)
For I had to grow plants, I went to Assumption School on Saturday.
Benne is so beautiful, cute, and intelligent, yet she doesn’t have a boyfriends.
1.2 การใช้เครื่องหมาย Punctuation กับ Coordinate Conjunction มีหลักการดังนี้
1.2.1 ถ้าเชื่อมคำ-คำ, วลี-วลี, อนุประโยค-อนุประโยค เพียง 2 คำ ไม่ต้องใส่เครื่องหมาย เช่น

2. Correlative Conjunction ได้แก่
2.1 either. . .or มีความหมายว่า ไม่คนใดก็คนหนึ่ง / ไม่สิ่งใดก็สิ่งหนึ่ง
เช่น
Either you or
I am going to school by bus tomorrow.
I must invite either you or her to the party tonight.
2.2 both. . . and มีความหมายว่า ทั้งคู่
เช่น
Both Jenny and
Pim are my juniors.
Air becomes both annoying and fussy.
2.3 neither. . . nor มีความหมายว่า
ไม่ทั้งคู่ เช่น
Neither Johnson nor
James will marry Susan next year.
2.4 not only. .
. but also มีความหมายว่า ไม่เพียงแต่....แต่ยัง...อีกด้วย เช่น
I study English
with a tutor not only to
pass the exam, but also to get much knowledge.
We worked hard not only for getting more salary, but
also for getting better positions.
3. Conjunctive Adverb คือ “กริยาวิเศษณ์สันธาน” ทำหน้าที่เป็นคำเชื่อมอนุประโยค เช่น

การใช้
Conjunctive Adverbs ในการเชื่อมอนุประโยค จะต้องใช้ semi colon (;) ในการเชื่อมประโยคและคำ Conjunctive Adverbs ต้องมี comma
ตาม ยกเว้น so และ otherwise ไม่ต้องมี comma เช่น
Bill went to school;
however, he didn't attend classes.
The check was for more than the balance; consequently, it bounced.
You will need to focus on the goal; otherwise it is easy to get
distracted.
Conjunctive
Adverbs สามารถวางได้หลายตำแหน่งโดยความหมายจะไม่เปลี่ยนไป
เช่น
We wanted to go on a picnic; however, the weather turned bad and we couldn’t go.
We wanted to go on a picnic; the weather turned bad, however, and we couldn’t go.
We wanted to go on a picnic. The weather turned bad and
we couldn’t go, however.
4. Subordinating Conjunction คือ “อนุสันธาน”
ใช้เชื่อมสองประโยคเข้าด้วยกันเพื่อให้มีความหมายที่สมบูรณ์
