Gerund คือรูปที่มี Verb Base + ing เช่น going, playing, standing, weaving เป็นต้น
ซึ่งคำเหล่านี้สามารถเป็น คำนาม โดยที่ทำหน้าที่ในประโยคได้ดังนี้
2.1 ประธานของประโยค (Subject) เช่น
Doing something interesting makes you happier.

2.2 กรรมตรงของประโยค (Direct Object) เช่น
I try doing something new.
They really loved jogging in the garden.

2.3 ส่วนขยายประธาน (Subjective Complement) เช่น
My favorite sport is running in the park.
The girls playing on the ground are my students.
What her loves most is looking the bus passing by.
2.4 ส่วนขยายกรรม (Objective Complement) เช่น
Yesterday, I saw a man standing near the riverbank.
I will take a chance going aboard.
2.5 กรรมของบุพบท (Object of Preposition) เช่น
Johnny is worried about wearing his new suit.
Jim needs to be trained in giving and preparing a
speech.
2.6 คำข้างเคียง (Appositive) เช่น
My favorite sport, running, takes a great deal of effort
